Today is the first Sunday of Lent. Lent is forty days from Ash Wednesday to Easter. Sundays don’t count. Sundays are always mini resurrection days. The lectionary assigns the temptation of Jesus as the Gospel reading for the first Sunday of Lent.
It assigns the Old Testament reading as Genesis chapter 3. When Adam and Eve were tempted by the Devil to eat from the forbidden tree, rebelled against God and fell from grace. Since then mankind has inherited Adam’s sinfulness. The Devil was successful in leading Adam to disobey God, so he tries his hand with Jesus.
